Sabbath
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.”
Exodus 20:8-11
And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.”
Mark 2:27-28
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11:28
So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.
Hebrews 4:9-10
Sabbath rest is the practice of intentional stopping of labor and productivity to remember and honor God. God rested on the seventh day after creating the universe not because He was tired, but because He was satisfied with all His good creation. We are dependent on God and His provision, and Jesus emphasized that the Sabbath day was made for our well being. Jesus perfectly fulfilled the Sabbath and invites us to come to Him for ultimate rest. We trust in God’s completed work through Christ, signaling that our worth is not found in making disciples of Jesus.
