Generosity
Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.
Proverbs 11:25
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:16
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.
John 13:34
Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.
2 Corinthians 9:7-8
A heart transformed by the Gospel produces generosity. As a discipline, this is a deliberate and joyful act of giving to others rooted in and reflecting God’s own nature. We seek to be generous of our time, resources, talents, compassion, and hospitality to imitate God’s selfless love seen most profoundly in the gift of Jesus Christ. Practicing generosity is a way for a disciple of Jesus to join in God’s mission of reconciliation and love in the world. God’s grace enables us to give cheerfully, as an outflowing of the Holy Spirit’s work within us that reshapes our desires and priorities.
Practical Suggestions
Follow “Incorporating Generosity into Your Spiritual Journey” in the Seed to Oaks blog.
Use part of your time with God to journal thanksgiving, regularly writing out the many ways God has graciously provided for you, not only financially, but in every area of your life. Remembering our all of our blessings helps us to be cheerful givers.
Pray that God would help you see all of life as an opportunity for generosity - your time, talents, and resources. As you pray ask him to help you see the many opportunities that exist for you to live generously.
Involve your MC in a giving challenge or “month of sacrifice” giving up an unnecessary “pleasure” like Starbucks for the month and give the money saved away to a missionary, local charitable organization, or the church.
