Retreat

There is fullness of joy to be had.

The mission of New City Women is to help women live in light of the gospel of Jesus Christ by growing in their knowledge of and love for God and neighbor.

One essential and practical way we do this is by teaching and embodying the disciplines of the Christian faith.

We are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, and the spiritual disciplines are a gift of grace to us as believers. We labor to keep the Lord always before us because we believe this truly brings delight, peace, and joy that overflow into the building up of the church and the good works we are called to.

Whether we’ve followed Christ for many years or are new to Christianity, we can feel confused, overwhelmed, or even guilty about things like prayer, Scripture reading, and time with God. Are these things necessary? Are they beneficial? How do I practice them? What can I do with my guilt or apathy about them?

Our salvation is secured by the gospel - the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Because we believe that God is the only true source of joy, we can joyfully labor with God to become who He created us to be. To live lives of perpetual abiding and obedience, leading to pleasure, peace, and joy.  “Abide in me, as I in you.  As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.” (John 15:4-5)

The scriptures declare these truths again and again:

“In His presence there is fullness of joy.  At his right hand are pleasures forevermore.” (Psalm 16)

“To set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.” (Romans 8:5)

“…the peace of God which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7)

“These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full.”  (John 15:11)

This is why we discipline ourselves to godliness.  This is why we as believers practice the spiritual disciplines.
