"New City Church...You Are Sent!"
by Arthur Lin
Our Sunday mornings always end with this charge…”New City Church, you are SENT!”
But WHY?!
Why do we say that?
At New City Church we gather to scatter. As a church family we gather to remember, to remember the good news of Jesus. We gather to rehearse the story of the gospel: Creation, Fall, Redemption, and Restoration. Through the liturgy, song, and sermon we remember and rehearse the gospel story: Creation, Fall, Redemption, and Restoration. We gather to remember why God is so good, why Jesus is our ultimate hero and savior. We gather to remember that through faith in Jesus we are new creations and are given new identities. We are beloved sons and daughters of the King. We are a family of missionary servants, disciples making disciples.
And before we scatter from the church building, we NEED to be reminded that there’s work to do. Our Sunday gathering isn’t just about making us feel good and encouraged, ready to face the week. Though it does that, it’s also about taking that life changing good news to the lost and dying world around us. This was Jesus’ commission to us right?
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.
Matthew 28:18-20
We are His disciples called to share the hope of Jesus. This charge is not just a job occupation or reserved for a particular group. It’s not just for the church staff or missionaries over seas. As believers we each have a beautiful opportunity to share the life-giving hope of Jesus with those around us whether at work, school, home, parks, restaurants, vacations, camp sites, wherever you find yourself!
This is why we say “You are sent.”
It’s a reminder that as sons and daughters of the King, there’s work to do.
It’s a reminder that our worship doesn’t just stop after the last song is played.
It’s a reminder that we are missionaries.
It’s a reminder that we live in a lost and very broken world.
It’s a reminder that we are sent to share the hope of the gospel with others.
So reader…you are SENT!
