I Shall Not Want

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for his name’s sake.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life.

Psalm 23

This past month New City Church has been learning a song entitled, “Shall Not Want” by Maverick City Music. The song is a beautiful rendition of Psalm 23. It has been a huge encouragement singing Psalm 23 as the gathered church on Sunday mornings. If you’re unfamiliar, take a listen below and follow along with the lyrics beneath. You’ll see that it’s almost word for word Psalm 23.

At New City Church singing is a big deal during our Sunday morning gatherings. It’s not just the “song time,” the part you can skip. Rather, it’s an opportunity to praise our good Father and be reminded of why He’s so good. It’s an opportunity to walk through the gospel story with our hearts and minds and emotions. It’s an opportunity to confess our misbeliefs and sins together as a church to our forgiving and gracious God. It’s an opportunity to celebrate Jesus, the cornerstone of our faith with brothers and sisters in Christ with joy and excitement!
So, take a listen to this song. Learn it. Be encouraged. And join us on Sunday as we celebrate the good news of the gospel!

If you’d like to know the songs for the upcoming Sunday, we have this handy-dandy playlist to help you prepare to sing. Click HERE to take a listen. Give it a follow so you can stay updated each week.

Shall Not Want

Will you be my light, when I cannot see?
When I can’t take another step, Lord, would you carry me?
When I’ve lost my fight, will You be my strength?
Will you set me a table in the presence of my enemies?

I shall not want, I shall not want
Oh my soul’s got a shepherd in the valley and I shall not want
I shall not want, I shall not want
Cause my cup’s running over, running over and I shall not want

I will lift my eyes to where my help comes from
And I won’t be afraid of the shadow cause I’ve seen the sun
No I will not stop, when the way gets hard
Cause the green only grows in the valley and that’s where You are

I shall not want, I shall not want
Oh my soul’s got a shepherd in the valley and I shall not want
I shall not want, I shall not want
Cause my cup’s running over, running over and I shall not want

I got goodness and I got mercy
Hallelu—, glory hallelujah
I got goodness and I got mercy
Hallelu—, glory hallelujah
I got goodness and I got mercy
Hallelu—, glory hallelujah
The good Shepherd leads me to the waters
Hallelu—, glory hallelujah
He anoints me, anoints me with His oil
Hallelu—, glory hallelujah
Now my cup is, my cup is running over
Hallelu—, glory hallelujah
I won’t fear, no, fear no evil
Hallelu—, glory hallelujah
I will dwelling His house forever
Hallelu—, glory hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelu—, glory hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelu—, glory hallelujah

When this is life is over, I’m gonna live again
Gonna trade this cross for a crown
No, this is not the end
When You call my name, I will take my rest
There’s a mansion in glory and You’re gonna meet me there

I shall not want, I shall not want
He will wipe every tear from my eyes
I shall not want
I shall not want, I shall not want
I’ll be home in His presence forever
I shall not want
For the Lord is my shepherd
And I shall not want
